Chelsea is a borough of Manhatten in New York, its bourdaries stretch from 14th Street to 30th Street and Sixth Avenue to the Hudson River. The Western part of Chelsea has become well known for being the centre of the New York art world and has well over 370 art galleries to visit and a wealth of artists studios mixed in. There is a vast array of ethnic shops and delis as well as boutique clothing shops and department stores. Some of the world famous shops in the area include Barneys CO-OP, which replaced the much larger original Barneys flagship store of Comme de Garcon as well as Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Christian Louboutin and Chelsea Market.

With the hustle and bustle of New York City literally on the doorstep, Chelsea is the perfect place to stay in order to explore the wider city attractions. There are literally hundreds of different things to see and tours to go on. Some of the must see attractions include the Empire State Building, Times Square, Central Park, The Statue of Liberty, the abundance of New York City museums, the Yankee Statium, Flushing Meadows, Brooklyn Bridge, World Trade Centre Memorial grounds, the famous New York nightlife and much much more.

Places of Interest

  • Hotel Chelsea - This was built in 1883-1885 and was New York's first cooperative apartment complex. It was designed by Hubert, Pirsson & Co and was the tallest building in the city until 1902. It was first converted into a hotel in 1905 after the theatre district went uptown and the area became a little more commercialised. Hotel Chelsea has attracted a lot of attention by being the place where Dylan Thomas was staying when he died in 1953 and also for being the place in 1978 where Nancy Spungen was slayed, a murder for which Sid Vicious was accused. Hotel Chelsea has also been the home of a lot of celebrities throughout the years including Thomas Wolfe, Mark Twain and Tennessee Williams.
  • Chelsea Market - This is an old restored marketplace which hosts bakeries, Italian grocers, fish market, Manhatten fruit exchange and a wine store amongst others.
  • Chelsea Piers - These were Chelsea's luxury cruise terminal between 1910 and 1935. Pier 60 was were HMS Titanic was headed before it met it's untimely end. Nowadays, some of the piers are home to an entertainment and sports complex.
